Get ready to launch into an exciting journey where curiosity meets imagination! In this project, students will dive deep into the fascinating world of space exploration careers, uncovering the incredible roles that are shaping the future of humanity beyond Earth. But here’s the twist—these careers aren’t just about what’s happening in space. They’re also about how we can make sure our journey into the stars supports sustainability and helps solve global challenges here on Earth.
In this activity, you’ll take on the role of researcher, explorer, and visionary, investigating current careers in space exploration while imagining the emerging roles of tomorrow. Every step of the way, you’ll be thinking critically about the skills and contributions needed to build a sustainable future both in space and on Earth.
From researching cutting-edge space careers to creating compelling presentations that highlight their connection to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this project will open your eyes to the exciting possibilities of a career in space. Follow the steps below and get ready to discover the future of work in space exploration!
Project Steps
Step 1
Introduction to Careers in Space Exploration
Introduce students to the vast world of space exploration careers. Explain that the field involves a wide range of professions—from scientists and engineers to technicians and designers—all working together to make space exploration possible. Highlight both traditional roles and cutting-edge careers that are emerging as space exploration evolves, including space miners, habitat designers, and space medicine specialists. This will broaden students’ perspectives on the many exciting opportunities available. You can download the related PowerPoint slidedeck and speaking notes for facilitators on the Resources page.
Step 2
Research
Assign students to research a specific career related to space exploration or space mining or have students design their own emerging profession! Students should dive deep into the responsibilities, required skills, and educational paths for each career. As they research, ask them to think critically about how these roles contribute to humanity’s progress in space and align with sustainable exploration efforts.
Step 3
Career Showcase
Students will select a specific career or field of expertise to develop a ‘Career Showcase’ presentation. They’ll highlight key aspects of their chosen profession, such as daily responsibilities, necessary skills, educational requirements, and its impact on space exploration or mining efforts. Encourage creativity by allowing students to envision and present their own imagined careers for the future, incorporating emerging technologies and needs. The goal is to help students think about how these roles shape the future of space exploration while addressing real-world challenges like sustainability and innovation
